Otothoe Subsector: The Otothoe Subsector has an
estimated population in 1202 of approximately 1.4 billion, a decrease of 92%
from its Pre-Collapse population. Akhigh has the highest population (800
million) while Satsugzakh has the highest tech level rating (11). The Darrgouts
Subsector (its former name) had an estimated population in 1120 of
approximately 17 billion. Its highest population was 10 billion at
Oengngirrgue. Otothoe had the highest tech level (13).
Subsector Notes:
TNE:
Being on good terms with the Imperium, and later the Regency, the Thoengling
Empire received ample warning of the coming of Virus. At first, Virus' forays
into this subsector were thwarted. In 1146, a Vampire fleet overran their
defenses and began to infect their ships and bomb their worlds. This Vampire
fleet continued to advance through this subsector and into Gvurrdon. The
Thoengling Empire suffered greatly and eventually forced to retreat. In 1202
the Thoengling Empire occupies a few worlds in
Gvurrdon sector.
The Vargr at Otothoe (115), the subsector capital for the Thoengling
Empire, did their best to fight off the advancing Vampire Fleets but eventually
fell. They have managed to maintain the best starport in the subsector and a
modest TL of 9.
Satsugzakh (120) is something of a miracle. With an atmosphere to thin to
support life on the few chunks of rock that rise above the ocean, the Vargr
built alot of domed facilities. When word reached here that Virus had finally
overrun the Thoengling Empire's forces, one facility sank itself to the ocean
floor. It cut off all communications and lowered its power output to minimum
levels. Although it may have seemed like an act of cowardice at the time, it
proved to be a wise decision. All other facilities were either destroyed by
bombardment or became infected and killed their inhabitants. After several
months of enduring a "bomb shelter" mentality, the facility's leaders gave
permission for the facility to resume "normal" operations. Although the facility
remains submerged at all times and the communications system has been
intentionally dismantled (personal communications exist but no central system),
these Vargr have been able to continue on with their lives. Their low numbers
(800+) will eventually require them to leave the security of their ocean depths
and return to the forboding depths of space.
It is a wonder that the Collapse at Akhigh (317) was not more
catastrophic. Despite falling back to the Stone Age, the population has already
rebounded to its Pre-Collapse level of 900 million+ Vargr. The Akhigh society
revolves entirely around the production and consumption of food. When they're
not sleeping or eating, they're working in the fields,
barns, and kitchens for the next meal.
Over 99.9% of the populace died during the drought that followed the Collapse on
Gvaekh (720). Unable to rely on water recycling units and moisture
condensers, a race to the poles ensued. Those few who have made it, rely on
lower tech and natural means of collecting water. So great is the need for water
that the recently deceased are even drained of their blood and their flesh
consumed. It originally began as cannibalism during the desert migration. It is
now part of their religion; a symbol of the struggle
of the Vargr against the harshness of their world.
