Brewpubs Rejoice!
Connecticut took another step in its emergence from the dark days of Prohibition. It is finally going to allow brewpubs to sell their creations outside of their premises. For 77 years, you could be a brewpub or a microbrewery, but not both. Connecticut was the last state in New England to remove this prohibition.
If this was such a no brainer, then why the fuck did it take so long to happen?
Of course, the brewpubs will still have to kiss ass to the wholesale distributors. State law prevents breweries of all kinds from selling directly to retailers. We still have to have the middlemen and thus that cost gets passed on to the consumer.
While there are only 9 brewpubs currently in CT, this change in the law could lead to growth in the local craft brew market. It opens up avenues of distribution previously unavailable. I've seen two local brewpubs (Colorado Brewery and The Flying Squire) go under because state law prevented them from expanding their revenue base. Survivors like Cambridge House and Bru Room will now have a chance to thrive.
And just maybe we'll see a brewpub return to Danbury.

"This new law represents a win-win situation," said (Governor) Rell's spokesman, Adam Liegeot. "It will enable state brew pubs to expand and grow jobs, which in turn produces additional tax revenue for cities and towns. This law is the result of small business owners letting their voices be heard by the state legislature."

You want to rant about some backwards alcohol regulations? Drop by my state some time. C-stores can only serve 3.2 beverages. Liquor stores can sell stronger beer, but not cold. They can't refrigerate anything! They can't sell ice, cold beer or wine, or cigs or anything. They can't sell coors six point. They don't sell on Sundays or election days, and buddy, that's when you want an open liquor store around here the most, Sundays and election days. The list goes on and on.
I'm glad they came down off their high horse where you are. You know that law was originally written to profit some special interest, right? They must have stopped bribing the local politicos. Sickening what this country has become.
Actually, the original law stems from the Prohibition era. It's just that no one's raised a stink about it until lately. The craft beer renaissance is only about 20 years old so it had alot of inertia to overcome.
Really sorry to hear about OK's blue laws. Damn, that sucks! We've got the Sunday rule and, until a couple years ago, stores couldn't sell alcohol after 8PM. Now it's 9. Back in the day, we used to make beer runs to NY as it's a short drive.
Time to start writing letters to your state reps, unless of course they're the socially conservative type.
I quit drinking some time ago, but I've been thinking about buying a case of booze in the event that I fall off the wagon. Pretty funny, a man has to think ahead these days. My grandfather had a case of Jim Beam under the counter at the lake up in Minnesota. I never saw him take a drink. I guess he couldn't stand the thought of not having a stash. That was some good stuff. My dad probably threw it away, what a waste.
That is truly outstanding news.
Tracy and I are planning on checking out the Cambridge Brew House in Granby some time this month. I had no idea we had a brewpub close by until just recently.
