5 Years Later
Why is Osama bin Laden still
free?
Afghanistan looks like it was practice for Iraq. Was that W's intent
all along? Rumors and conspiracies abound that it was. We know now that the
sanctions worked, keeping WMD's out of Saddam's hands, and we know that Saddam
had
nothing
to do with the tragedy that occurred on this date. So why didn't he lay down
his cards instead of continuing his bluff? Well, it would appear that he was
stuck between a rock and a hard place. The illusion of WMD's kept his neighbor,
Iran, who he warred upon for several years, at bay. But said illusion also
alarmed the mighty powers of the West who pounded him into submission a decade
ago. What's an evil, maniacal dictator to do? Thinking the Bush Jr. to be just
like Sr., he bluffed. We called. Obviously an intelligence failure on his part
(in more ways than one).
So, the net result of this distraction is that Osama bin Laden is still free.
We're stuck in Iraq because our pride insists we stay there. 2,600 dead. 20,000
wounded. Iraqi casualties much greater. Iran and North Korea have become
emboldened. We lack the fiscal and military resources to do anything about them.
And terrorist attacks continue in other parts of the world: Bali, London,
Madrid, Mumbai. Whether Osama ordered them or inspired them doesn't matter. So
long as he's still free, he will inspire others to follow him, and those who
died on this day will not have justice.
