Yucca Mountain Goes To Digital Court
Yucca Mountain, for those of you unfamiliar with it, is the proposed site for
the nation's super long term nuclear waste storage facility. No, this isn't a W
thing. It's actually been under construction since the 80's. Despite years of
studies that have deemed it safe, not everyone is convinced. Nevada's gone the
NIMBY route and fought it tooth and nail. A good article on the history of it
can be found here.
So for the next 3-4 years, the courtroom will hear testimony from both sides.
But because of the sheer volume of evidence to be presented, an estimated 50,000
documents, someone actually had the foresight to throw the case into digital
court. I wish I knew who so that I could thank them. The future of our
courtrooms is now here (Link to Washington Technology article no longer
valid). It will save paper (an unfulfilled promise made decades ago by the
PC revolution forebears) and time (speeding up our notoriously backlogged
courts). While it will take years, if not decades, for the technology to make
its way through the rest of the country, it will happen.
